After the anti-austerity Syriza swept to victory in the Greek general election last month, the country’s new finance minister Yanis Varoufakis has been thrust into the spotlight. With his open collar shirts and motorbike-riding style, he’s not your ordinary finance minister, something which has not gone unnoticed by Germans who are used to somewhat duller models.
While negotiating the country’s bailout package with the European Central Bank, IMF and EU, he’s become a bit of a bogeyman for neoliberal politicians continent-wide – and particularly those in Germany.
Now, satirical late-night German show Neo Magazine Royale has created a song praising (or perhaps ridiculing) defining features.
“From off in the distance there comes a man… Crazed seeking vengeance against our peaceful land!
Jacket collar raised, on a black motorbike… he puts the hell in Hellenic and wants to take our pride!
Yanis Varoufakis, Greek Minister of Awesome! >He doesn’t negotiate, he simply kicks ass.”
This is V for Varoufakis and it is glorious…
