The cancer at the heart of American Politics

I have mentioned before with some despair the race hate and abuse which has so coarsened political debate in America, Donald Trump is still surging in the polls thanks to his appeal to the racist base of the Republican Party. But Trump’s comments on immigrants were only possible because of the right wing noise machine – a machine that has been tailored to specifically drum up the fringe of the Republican Party on issues like race.

However even with my low expectations even I was amazed at the low-life response to former President Jimmy Carter’s announcement that he has liver cancer.

Former President Jimmy Carter (D) announced on Wednesday that he has advanced liver cancer. “Recent liver surgery revealed that I have cancer that now is in other parts of my body,” said Carter, who is 90. “I will be rearranging my schedule as necessary so I can undergo treatment by physicians at Emory Healthcare. A more complete public statement will be made when facts are known, possibly next week.”

The announcement was met with an outpouring of well-wishes and support from several politicians and high-profile people in the media, and all around the world. However, Fox News and conservative squawk box Debbie Schlussel said something disgusting, as usual.

It is beyond comprehension how an outlet that even pretends to call itself “news” can endorse such offensive sentiments. While Jimmy Carter’s presidency is not remembered all that fondly, the amazing work he has done since then cannot be understated. The work he’s done has helped thousands of people across the world, and he deserves so much more than to be slandered by hateful pundits. Not just that unlike the armchair soldiers of Fox News Jimmy Carter is somebody who has served his Country and community faithfully. He was a Senator and Governor of the State off Georgia and one of the US Navy’s first nuclear submarine commanders having a distinguished navy career leading the US clean up team and personally being lowered into a radioactive area at the Chalk River Laboratories.

He left the Navy after his father’s death and living in public housing for the first year in Plains, Georgia (the only US President to live in public housing) he revived the family’s farm and built a successful business. He never lost his roots and still goes into Minnie’s Diner in Plains. He became involved in politics due to his opposition to Jim Crow racism in Georgia. As President he pardoned all Vietnam draft evaders on his second day in office and informed by his own real life experiences of nuclear arms he stopped development of the Neutron Bomb and pushed ahead with the SALT II arms reduction treaties. He has been a consistent advocate for the rights of Palestinians and for a just peace in the Middle East. The Nobel Peace Prize 2002 was awarded to Jimmy Carter “for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development”.

Since when did the once great Republican Party of Abraham Lincoln degenerate into a miasma of self loathing hatred? Since when did the 39th President of the United States who has led a distinguished and selfless life of public service and decency deserve such hateful abuse when he is confronting personal tragedy with his customary bravery and decency?

The Skibbereen Eagle

In 1898, to widespread bemusement, a small Provincial Newspaper in an equally small town in the South West corner of Ireland sonorously warned the Czar of Russia that it knew what he was up to and he should be careful how he proceeded for “The Skibbereen Eagle” was wise to his game and in future would be keeping its eye on him! It is doubtful that Nicholas II, Emperor and Autocrat of All the Russias, even noticed the Eagle’s admonitions but as history soon proved he should have paid closer attention to the Eagle’s insightful opinions!

Today, powered by its readers and contributors, from its cyber eyries in Ireland and the centres of the Irish Diaspora The Eagle casts its Cold Eye on Life and Death and much in between.
