Jacqui Berry responds to Jeremy the Spiv

Having completed a 14-and-a-half hour shift, NHS nurse Jacqui Berry delivered a powerful attack on health minister Jeremy Hunt, who’s none too popular with many NHS workers at the moment. Earlier this month Mr Hunt said doctors should ‘get real’ about weekend working, and said senior staff are not doing enough weekend shifts.

For NHS workers this was the final straw and they have since hit back, posting pictures, videos and open letters decrying the minister’s statement. The Twitter hashtag #ImInWorkJeremy has been used thousands of times in the backlash.

And a petition on the UK Government and Parliament website calling for Mr Hunt to be sacked has been signed by more than 190,000 people. In her video, Jacqui said: ‘We already have seven day working in the NHS, this government just doesn’t want to pay for it.’ The nurse starts by joking that her “stethoscope is real, not from the Early Learning Centre” and goes on to deliver an eloquent arse-whooping of the government’s attitude to healthcare.

She accused the health minister of ‘picking a fight’ with staff who already do work at weekends. And the nurse continued: ‘While gearing up to scrap unsocial hours payment, cap our wages at one per cent and demand more weekend work with no additional resources, it’s clear what’s really going on. It’s a wholesale attack on the NHS as part of the drive for further privatisation.’ She pulled no punches saying it was ironic for Jeremy Hunt to accuse NHS staff “of being a bunch of nine to fivers” when he was “heading off for a seven week break”. Ouch!

The Skibbereen Eagle

In 1898, to widespread bemusement, a small Provincial Newspaper in an equally small town in the South West corner of Ireland sonorously warned the Czar of Russia that it knew what he was up to and he should be careful how he proceeded for “The Skibbereen Eagle” was wise to his game and in future would be keeping its eye on him! It is doubtful that Nicholas II, Emperor and Autocrat of All the Russias, even noticed the Eagle’s admonitions but as history soon proved he should have paid closer attention to the Eagle’s insightful opinions!

Today, powered by its readers and contributors, from its cyber eyries in Ireland and the centres of the Irish Diaspora The Eagle casts its Cold Eye on Life and Death and much in between.
