Today is “Blue Monday” but the start of the year is not depressing for those of us fortunate enough to live along Ireland’s iconic Wild Atlantic Way – one of the great tourism marketing success stories.

Irish band Walking on Cars have provided the soundtrack to a new Wild Atlantic Way video, and it rocks… ‘Embrace the Wild Atlantic Way’, commissioned by Fáilte Ireland, pairs soaring shots of the west coast with an epic, homegrown soundtrack.

The aim is to transport viewers from Blue Monday to the brilliant possibilities along the world’s longest coastal touring route, it says. Though just over a minute long, the video features a host of iconic oceanside experiences, from surfing emerald waves to horse riding, teeming festivals and oysters being pried open to a backdrop of blustery waves.

By now, Fáilte Ireland has built quite a track record using Irish bands in its advertising – having featured tunes from Heathers, Ham Sandwich and The Riptide Movement, among others, in its various campaigns. Patrick Sheehy, frontman of Walking on Cars, who provide the latest soundtrack, is no stranger to the Wild Atlantic Way. He grew up in Dingle. “The views (of the Dingle Peninsula) definitely helped the vibe along as we were trying to find our sound,” Patrick says. “Our songs are quite epic, and we believe that the landscape around us had something to do to that.”

The beginning of a new year is always an exciting time. With a sense of adventure pervading, plans are made and new holiday destinations plotted. Leave the ordinary elsewhere, visit the Irish west coast and immerse yourself in the unique Wild Atlantic Way of life. As seen in Failte Ireland’s new video, it’s a relaxed pace that both soothes the soul, and – as you venture to the windswept edge of the world – makes the heart race! 2017 is the perfect time to visit places like Donegal, National Geographic’s ‘coolest place on the planet’, Skellig Ring, Lonely Planet’s must-see for 2017, or Erris in Mayo – officially Ireland’s best place to go wild!

Choose from surfing, kayaking, coasteering on picture-perfect beaches, quiet walks along secluded, windswept clifftops – and of course, the absolutely mouth-watering seafood just waiting to be sampled! With so much to do, it’s the perfect holiday option. So – how will you embrace the Wild Atlantic Way this Year.

See you in West Cork and along the Wild Atlantic Coast in 2017 Boyos!!

The Skibbereen Eagle

In 1898, to widespread bemusement, a small Provincial Newspaper in an equally small town in the South West corner of Ireland sonorously warned the Czar of Russia that it knew what he was up to and he should be careful how he proceeded for “The Skibbereen Eagle” was wise to his game and in future would be keeping its eye on him! It is doubtful that Nicholas II, Emperor and Autocrat of All the Russias, even noticed the Eagle’s admonitions but as history soon proved he should have paid closer attention to the Eagle’s insightful opinions!

Today, powered by its readers and contributors, from its cyber eyries in Ireland and the centres of the Irish Diaspora The Eagle casts its Cold Eye on Life and Death and much in between.
